Why is DPP becoming the new standard??
The European Union has adopted the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) to ensure that, by 2030, every product placed on the EU market is sustainable and transparent. The Digital Product Passport is a cornerstone of this strategy and will become mandatory from 2026 in the first sectors (batteries, textiles, electronics).
Legal framework & timeline
- 18 July 2024 – ESPR regulation enters into force.
- 1 February 2027 – passports mandatory for traction, LMT and industrial batteries > 2 kWh.
- 2026 → 2030 – gradual extension to textiles, electronics, construction materials and furniture.
What does a DPP contain?
- Material composition and component origin.
- Carbon footprint and resource consumption.
- Repair, reuse and recycling instructions.
- Certificates and environmental declarations.
- Production batch ID and factory location.
- Product service history (e.g. for batteries).
How does it work in practice?
The product receives a unique identifier, most often as a chemically‑resistant label with a QR code. When scanned, the user (or a supervisory authority) is taken to a secure data repository that shows information relevant to their role – from raw‑material composition to service history.
